Born Against: The Way of Jesus as Protest

A.J. Swoboda recently wrote a very thoughtful piece on how the Christian faith relates to the occupy protest movement. I want to make sure at the outset that I acknowledge the article said many positive things about the movement including,

Protest isn’t new. The prophets protested endlessly against evil, injustice, and at times the institution in the Hebrew Scriptures…Jesus protested too. His entire existence was a protest against death, sin, and evil.

However, Swoboda also says, “We are not born against. We are born again. We are born for.” While this was written as a critique of protest movements, I think it fundamentally misunderstands this particular movement. In some ways it may also misunderstand something fundamental about the Christian narrative.
I previously wrote about why the Occupy movement’s position is not primarily (or only) against something (Occupy This Blog?!). Certainly there are some basic grievances that the movement has made clear. However, Douglas [...]

DSLR Audio Solutions!

Okay so we’ve got a dslr some lenses and a boom mic, but we cant monitor the sound, so we dont know if were getting static, noise or dialogue. Only have the on screen levels to judge from (if your camera has it) so as many of us look to use dslrs for shooting films, what do we do!?!! Audio is so essential, a viewer will allow bad camera work but will not sit through bad audio!
Heres how i got around the problem!
First thing is first, what money do you have available to you? we would all love to just go out and buy a junction box with all different kinds of possibilities for audio but those things are just too damn expensive! So i looked at what i have available to me.

About 10 years back there was a semi failed formatte called “Mini-Disk” I was one of the few [...]

An Excellent Example Of Compassion And Causality At Work

An Excellent Example Of Compassion And Causality At Work
Ven. David Xi-Ken Astor
I found this post from the Huff Post as reported by the BBC today that I thought was an excellent example of how compassionate emotions (the intent of action) and karmic-causality (results) can work together to bring human flourishing.
It is about a 7 year old boy in Buenos Aires that was born with brain damage so severe that the doctors told his parents that he would never walk.  After many unsuccessful surgeries his father, Jorge Cardile a car repair shop owner, was determined to find a way around his son’s disability.  Jorge said, “I said to myself, I have to do something, and well, I got the idea to put a brain in his feet, and so I did that and we got results.”  Jorge toyed with a bike and wooden planks to build a machine to stretch his [...]

Here Is A Single Goal For Occupy Wall Street

Break up the big banks. That is it.  That should be our goal.
Let’s start with one goal, and this is it.  No one will disagree with us who is not paid and controlled by the bank lobby.  Unfortunately,  today that means much of Congress.  Which is why the Occupy folks have a role to play.
“Too Big To Fail” should mean “Too Big to Exist”.
Our money center banks are too big to fail.  Everyone knows it.  Everyone acts on it.
As a result, we are held  hostage.  We must feed the banks  by keeping interest rates too low, robbing savers, to rebuild bank capital.  We must guarantee all their obligations in crisis, because they are so interconnected, the “system” will fail if one of the big banks goes down.
What a system.  Bankers keep the profits when times are good.  They dump the losses on us when times are bad.
We have learned nothing [...]

Crying in the Car

Today I had an epiphany. It should have come to me much earlier. For the past three weeks, Tater has cried every time we put her in the car. She’s fine just in the car seat, but put that car seat in the car and she cries the whole way to wherever we’re going. We’ve known for a while that she loves to be outside. If she’s fussing, usually a short walk outside can calm her down. So my big epiphany? Roll down the windows. Ha, totally worked. This time anyway.
